James Productions April 2013 Update
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time … swapping my Road Bike for a pair of Road Runners and entering the Clare Half Marathon ( JKTP & TM also joined in as team sponsors)
While most civilized folk have been indulging in mountains of chocolate Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns, I have been tackling mountains of a different kind … training hard in prep for the big race day.
My four-legged pal, Sir Winston, has been loving this new excuse to join me on my early morning pavement pounding excursions. But, while he eases his post-run fatigue with a comatose 12-hour nap on the kitchen floor in a puddle of doggie drool, I hit the work day with my camera bag, aching feet, and a strong coffee.
This month I shot a mixed bag … some fun employee portraits for Adelaide Design Agency, ‘Soupcan’, some characterful pics of hard working miners for RESA ( check out examples on RESA’s Facebook page, ‘ HOT RUBBLE’).
Morning Light … nothing beats it and last week, I bagged two ripper sunrise backdrops. For The University of Adelaide, I snapped vocational opportunities on a golden wheatfield at Roseworthy … and for Torbreck Vintners in the Barossa, prizewinning grapes ready for harvest. ( which I sampled in combo with a pizza at the local pub later that day … nice)
Hot Melbourne Design Firm ERD, are currently producing MMG’s Annual Report featuring my humble handiwork of the last 12 months.
And, finally, for Adelaide Mag, I photographed the cool new Franklin Hotel reno. Owners, Katie and Scotty, pulled off a great job with quirky features, local art and a brilliant upcycled design aesthetic. Katie even gave me some rockin’ design ideas for the new TM Offices currently under transformation … Thanks!
As owner and principal photographer of Truly Madly Weddings, I’ve been lucky enough to capture the special moments of many matrimonial celebrations. But, at the recent Lobethal nuptials of good mate Mark and his partner Marika, I handed over the camera duties to fellow, very capable TM photographer, Sophia. ( check out the fantastic pics here … Great job Sophia!)
I even ‘manned- up’ with a new suit and participated in the ceremony. Thanks guys! Truly Madly Wedding Photographers
Lastly, an exciting project is on the horizon for JKTP/James productions. At a dusty mine in Far North Queensland, we’ll capture time-lapse footage remotely, beaming it back to my Adelaide Studio hard-drive in ‘real – time’ ready for instant edit, polish and dispatch … pretty wicked, huh?
If only I could apply the same fandangle technology to my current, early morning training sessions … fast forward through the 5.30am alarm and gruelling muscle burn, ready to press stop when Sir Winston and I pass out on the kitchen floor.
Cheers
James

Been playing around with the Adobe Premiere Pro which is awesome. Prefer it over Final Cut Pro.
This project are just ungraded shorts for my client to make sections. Final project will be a online article on the rehabilitation the mining company is working towards.
The music is just what I was listen to at the time.

Travelling the Globe for the best photographs ( and the best down-hill runs) I’ve spent my fair share of time hanging out in foreign airports. But, no matter the zip code, you can almost guarantee a few commonalities … a pair of Macca’s shiny ‘Golden Arches’, a spot of Duty Free shopping and a decent cup of hot coffee.
So, when I travelled abroad recently for MMG, to catalogue one of their overseas mines, only to discover a far flung Arrivals Lounge completely devoid of Western world trappings, with but a single make-shift café spruiking bowls of curry that would blow one’s head right off one’s shoulders, I knew I’d met my match …. Welcome to Laos!
Nestled between China and Vietnam, the Laos landscape is remote, largely
undeveloped and has ‘adventure’ stamped all over it.
Jostled by heavy rains, meandering livestock, stifling humidity and an impending cyclone, our entire crew piled into a squeezy mini van for a 6 hour journey via dirt roads and dense jungle to photograph the remote copper/zinc mine south of the capital, Vientiane.
Directing a comprehensive photo shoot sans translator was a challenge … despite my best efforts, sadly, I’ve discovered I’m no Charades aficionado. But, the friendly local Laos miners took it all in their stride and the photographs … including the ones cranked out with my F1.2 Lens … were smashing!
We also visited surrounding villages to document the many impressive community initiatives and infrastructure, provided by MMG, like clean drinking water.
Mucking around with the local kids was a real highlight too … even showing them a few camera tricks … loads of feel-good fun.
With flash flooding and two overturned logging trucks, our mini van return journey left me wrestling with the real possibility of hiking back to town through knee deep jungle mud, with $10,000 worth of camera equipment strapped to my head. Thankfully, our horn-tooting driver delivered us back to the airport café just in time for take-off.
With barely a moment to wash the Laos Monsoon off my windbreaker, I headed to another grey-sky location THIS side of the Equator …Tasmania!
I snapped a selection of great pics at Roseberry Mines … with a few downhill trails between camera rounds, for good measure.
But I’ll also be venturing a little closer to home as well … across to Port Lincoln to document the construction of mining project, Mega graphite … utilizing James Knowler Photography stills, time-lapse and video … nice!
On the edge of Lincoln National park, the scenery will be sweet, but, camping in a tent in the middle of winter … not so much.
Where’s a bowl of hot Laos curry when you need one??
My brilliant assistant, Sopia, has been out shooting some PR gigs for me too, including ‘Idol’ favourite, Shannon Noll, for the CocaCola Australia Foundation, as well as a handful of colourful events at the Festival Centre.
It won’t be long before I’m flashing my Passport again … I’ll be in the Congo from September 23-30 … looking forward to that!
Cheers …
James

Some people have a Bucket List. Me? …I don’t care much for lists. I just pick the most awesome adventure I can imagine … pack my bag (and my bike) and GO for it!
This time, as my adventure de jour, I chose the, 350 km/ 7 day all-mountain 'Trans-Provence' in France. Some of the roughest and most technically challenging tracks on the Planet … think 2km of vertical climb each day. But, my ‘Lapierre Spicy 516 handled every inch like a dream (well, it WAS made in France!)
Flanked by snow-capped alps, mountain streams, remote idyllic country-side ( and the odd donkey) made for an experience and a half … no tourist buses in these parts.
Travelling with a great bunch of guys – Aussies, Poms, Belgians and other global bike enthusiasts, we pit-stopped along the way at cute storybook villages, stuffed a few bagettes in our gobs, shared some ale with the locals and celebrated our finish by diving into the waters at Monaco Beach, lycra and all!
Considering the crazy terrain, I’m really surprised that there weren’t more serious injuries and broken bones … just a finger, 3 ribs, and one Belgian needed medical intervention when the ‘crown jewels’ turned a suspicious shade of blue!
Took some hot, scenic pics with my trusty, 'Happy Snap' http://www.jamesknowler.com.au/galleries/TransProvene And, because it's not such a wise idea to take your hands off the handlebars mid-race, I strapped a video-cam to my helmet and grabbed some ripper downhill footage as well. http://vimeo.com/jktp/trans
Already planning the next trip with the same gang of International riders … NZ!
It was business as usual the moment I set foot back Down Under. In Victoria, I wrapped a JKP Video assignment for Pitcher Partner Accountants … the perfect match for a series of stills I had recently produced for them. http://vimeo.com/jktp/pp
Another slick video production soon in the works, will be for new client, Ruggabella Wines.
Hillgrove Resources are also thrilled with their latest Annual Report, chock-full with examples of my handywork. Including, a spectacular double-page spread of their Processing Plant at night. Wicked. Also complete for Hillgrove, an in-depth JKP Video documenting their entire mining process ... from rock excavation to the final product being loaded on the ship. Facinating! http://vimeo.com/jktp/kanmantoo
Two new House Features also in the bag this month include ... for Real Living Magazine, a super-cool cottage in Croydon, decked out in Mid-Century Vintage, and for House and Garden Magazine, a bright and trendy shop conversion in Melbourne, home to an Australian Interiors Blogger.

At the end of the month, I made my way to the popular, South Australian coastal town of Goolwa, to capture a new retirement development at the Goolwa Caravan Park on the edge of Lake Alexandrina. Despite my recent international capers, and fancy French cuisine, it appears I'm still an Aussie boy at heart. While camping out at dawn to photograph sunrise across the southern lake’s edge, the only thing I had to keep me warm ...? a piece of Vegemite toast!
